|| Om Guru Om ||

The word homa comes from the Sanskrit root ‘Hu‘, which means “to offer” or “to present”.

The Vedas explain this process by stating:

“Pure Consciousness manifested itself as space/ether.
Then, from space, arose
air,
from air arose fire
and from fire arose
water
and from water arose earth.”

The Vedic Sacred Fire Ceremony, performed according to the Vedic tradition and known as Homa or Yajña, is a very ancient practice given by the Rishis, the sages of ancient times, to help manifest what we wish to achieve in our lives.

It removes negative energies and thoughts that hinder our growth and helps us attract positive energies.

Worldly requests (such as wealth, good health, success in business, and protection from enemies) are presented to the sacred fire, and blessings are offered in the form of oblations such as special woods or roots, empowered by the priest with the names of the individuals and sealed with a mantra, according to the Deity to whom the homa is dedicated.

The Science of Homa

In a homa, the fire is the most subtle element that we can perceive with our eyes and is used as a medium to invoke the presence of God.

The Brahmin priest, who guides and performs the ceremony, meditates upon the Deity and consecrates the space. The energy is transferred to the element of air as the priest chants the powerful sacred mantras. This energizes the fire in the Homa Kunda, which is the vessel of the sacred fire. The accumulated energy is then transferred to the element of water in the Kalasha, the pots or vessels that contain the water. When the priest sprinkles this water upon the Deity or the devotee, the energy is transferred to the element of earth.

When the fire is consecrated, it becomes the invoked Deity and remains so until the ceremony is completed.

The Deity is then worshipped, and various material and symbolic offerings called Ahuti are made, such as (ghee, milk, sugar, herbs, spices, saffron, coconut, grains, seeds, and flower petals), as offerings to the Sacred Fire to help manifest one's aspirations and intentions.

The smoke that emanates from the Homa Kunda, the vessel of the Sacred Fire, energizes the entire space, the ether and creates an atmosphere of blessings and positive vibrations, not only for those who participate in the ceremony, but also for those whose names were chanted in the Sankalpa Mantra, even if they are far away.

The consecrated fire is the vital link between the consciousness of the cosmos and that of human beings. It possesses the great power to help us manifest our desires into reality, as it serves as the messenger that carries our prayers to the Deities.
