EKADASHI FAST
The Eleventh Lunar Day
The Path of Lunar Purification
The Ekadashi is an ancient purification technique coming from the Vedic wisdom of India.
It takes place on the Eleventh Lunar Day of each phase SHUKLA PAKSHA waxing moon and KRISHNA PAKSHA waning moon, happening approximately every 15 days.
It is considered a gift from the sages to free the body from dense energies and elevate consciousness toward the light.
¿Qué es Ekadashi?
In Sanskrit, Ekadashi means "eleven". It refers to a specific moment in the lunar cycle when the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun creates a subtle vibration capable of purifying all that it touches.
- The Science behind the Tithi: A tithi is a lunar day. Ekadashi happens on the 11th tithi.
- Mental Influence: Since the Moon governs the mind, this day is especially favorable for self-observation and the mastery of the senses.
- Energetic Purification: By keeping the body free of heavy foods, moonlight absorbs accumulated memories in the energy channels, illuminating the heart and purifying the bloodstream.
The Glories of Ekadashi
The scriptures describe this day as the greatest of all spiritual offerings. Its benefits are not merely physical, but transcendental:
- Divine Protection: Ekadashi is regarded as a manifestation of Lord Vishnu’s Maha-Shakti (inner power), offering protection to those who seek refuge in the observance of this sacred fast
- Protección Divina: Ekadashi es una manifestación de la Maha-Shakti (el poder interior) del Señor Vishnu, quien protege a quienes buscan refugio en este ayuno.
- Spiritual Elevation: It is said that listening to the 24 sacred narrations of the Glories of Ekadashi while observing the fast elevates the soul toward the eternal light.
- Infinite Merit: It is the most auspicious day for practicing charity, meditation, and the chanting of mantras.
Why Avoid Grains and Legumes?
The Vedic tradition teaches that on this day, negative energies are believed to settle in grains and legumes. By abstaining from them:
- We give the digestive organs a chance to rest.
- We avoid energetic density.
- We elevate our vibrational frequency to restore our union with the Absolute.
Levels of Fasting
The preparation begins the evening on the previous afternoon, during(Dashami) with a light meal.
The fast is broken the following day, during (Dvadashi) after sunrise. You may choose the level of fasting according to your capacity:
| Level | Description of the Fast |
| Level 1 | No grains, cereals, or legumes. Fruits, vegetables, roots, nuts, amaranth, quinoa, and dairy products are permitted. |
| Level 2 | Same as Level 1, but without dairy products. |
| Level 3 | Only raw fruits, uncooked vegetables, and juices. |
| Level 4 | Exclusive consumption of liquids. |
| Level 5 | Total Fast (Nirjala): No water or food for more than 33 hours. |
Important Note: For a strict fast, avoid all spices except rock salt, black pepper, and cumin. External cleanliness (bathing and personal hygiene) should accompany inner purification.
Before beginning, it is essential to establish an intention or Sankalpa.
This spiritual purpose will sustain your willpower throughout the day, transforming the simple act of abstaining from food into a powerful discipline of awareness and divine love.
